Visions & Stories for the Afterlife: Remapping the Journey
Over and over one hears the question asked in many forms, "Why am I so afraid of Death?"
Why indeed? Part of the answer may lie in the visions and stories we have been handed by our religious and spiritual traditions about what will happen to us when we die. Some of these tales are downright scary. Often they have to do with being judged, either from an outside authority (God the Judge) or an internal sense of having to "face the music." as we drop all illusions, see ourselves clearly, and take responsibility for our thoughts, words and actions. No matter what the form, there is a sense that death brings us face to face with the truth. Many people carry deep within their inner souls a belief that when they die there will indeed be a reckoning. The fear is, of course, that we will be found wanting and be punished.
On the other hand, many indigenous people have very different stories about the afterlife that speak of reconciliation, acceptance, coming home. Why are we continuing to follow (believe) stores that are about judgment, punishment, and suffering? Since all of these stories have been made up in the first place, why not make up new ones?
Anyone who has uncovered hidden fears in the course of therapy or simply in the course of life itself, knows what a great relief it is to feel unburdened and freed from that incredible tightness that accompanies fear.
This workshop is an opportunity to first examine afterlife beliefs and gently release any accompanying fears. Using visuals, music, meditation, journaling, creative expression, and discussion, people then are free to craft for themselves a New Afterlife Story that reflects a relationship with truth not colored by judgment and fear- a story founded on truth the honors respect, harmony, love, and acceptance.
Visions and Stories for the Afterlife is offered in either one or two-day versions. Participants will be asked to bring a journal and a blanket or shawl.
