Show Me a Story
Show Me a Story is an in-classroom or assembly style program using stories - folktales and myths - music, and movement, to create integrative, interactive whole-brain learning experiences for children. Our presentations bring together literature, social studies, geography, the earth sciences, and the arts using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities. Each program includes a time for children to question, discover and discuss; allowing them to explore new ways of perceiving the world around them. The result: exciting new tools for continued learning and growing.
Each program consists of one or two "storytellings" with percussive music and simple yoga movements choreographed to accompany the stories - with students participating in the movements throughout. Following the story - movement - music portion of the program, Show Me a Story leads follow-up activities consisting of discussions, writing (where appropriate), and expressive arts activities.
Show Me a Story is suitable for children in grades K through 5. Each presentation is adjusted for the age group involved so that the children can fully appreciate and engage with the stories, music, movements and other activities. Show Me a Story will custom-create programs to integrate with each grade level language arts, social studies, and/or science curricula. We also offer teacher training workshops.
Presentations can take place in individual classrooms or open spaces such as gymnasiums. Participating students will need space for movement. Show Me a Story can also be part of an after-school program.
Program 1
Circle of Life: Our Ever Changing World
Using our environment and the earth sciences as guides, we introduce stories of life, death, and beyond, plus creation stories from around the world, to enable children to become aware of life's everyday beginnings and endings - from birth to death. This program is designed to help children explore some of the common rites of passage practiced in diverse cultures and experience the concept of natural change and transition as a way to begin to appreciate the continuous circle of life.
Program 2
Who Are You? Who Am I?
The stories in this program focus on opening the children's imaginal realms and creating new pathways to understanding the concepts and values of relationship: community, connection, respect, and compassion. Here it is our intention to help children begin to grasp what it means to live in a world in which all life is interconnected.
